Celebration of 850 years of Essen

Nieuwpoort is a small fishing harbour on the North Sea coast, and is well-known for its shrimps. The city is made up of two distinct parts, the old city centre and its market place and fishing harbour, and the coastal town where thousand of holiday appartments have been built by the beach. Nieuwpoort boasts of the largest harbour and docking facilities for sailing yachts and pleasure craft in Europe. The old city lies at the mouth the river Yser. The areas in and around this river were the scene of major bloody battles during World War I and II.

After our visit in Bergs Slussar, we drove on to Vimmerby (Småland) where would be staying for the next couple of days in a small cottage. Vimmerby is where Astrid Lindgren lived and got inspiration for her books. There is an Astrid Lindgren theme park but we didn’t visit it.

On day 7 it was time for us to move to our next destination: Arvika (Värmland). The distance from Uddevalla to Arvika is about 255 km. We didn’t take the shortest route though, but decided to take the scenic route via Strömstad and a short stretch through Norway.

We didn’t stay in Gothenburg upon our arrival, in stead we opted to take the scenic route to our first destination: Uddevalla (Bohuslän).

To limit the number of hours spent in the car driving up to Sweden, we chose to take a boat from the port of Ghent (Belgium) to Gothenburg (Sweden). This was a small adventure in itself, as this isn’t an avarage passenger ship we’re talking about.
